First Gaming Application Joins Starknet on Ethereum's Layer-2

First Gaming Application Joins Starknet on Ethereum's Layer-2

Date: 2025-02-25 16:05:11

Starknet, an Ethereum layer-2 solution, is set to welcome its inaugural application-chain that will settle on the network.

This layer-3 app-chain, named Nums, is constructed using the "SN Stack," a versatile toolkit enabling developers to create layer-3 blockchains based on Starknet's technology.

In essence, Nums is an on-chain game where players attempt to sequence a series of 20 randomly generated numbers. Users can earn $NUMS tokens by participating in the game, with the tokens being issued via Starknet.

StarkWare, the primary development firm behind Starknet, revealed in July 2023 that they were working on the SN Stack. This revelation came after similar announcements from several of StarkWare's competitors, such as Arbitrum's Orbit Stack and Optimism's OP Stack, both released in 2023. StarkWare's SN Stack was launched in January of this year.

Although various layer-2 stacks are already operational and layer-3 games exist on these chains, the team behind Nums asserts that their decision to use Starknet's technology stems from its ability to support more "computationally complex and more ambitious" applications. This was stated by Tarrence van As, the CEO of Cartridge, the primary developer firm behind Nums, during an interview with CoinDesk.

Starknet, which employs Cairo as its programming language, makes it "much easier to express these types of applications," van As added. (Ethereum utilizes Solidity, a different programming language, to create its applications. Most layer-2s also use Solidity.)

Cartridge is one of the main development teams working on Starknet, recognized for releasing its Dojo framework, a tool engine that enables developers to build games and applications on the network.
